What To Do After Your Tarot or Cartomancy Reading Ends

by | Aug 8, 2015

The cards have been laid. The messages have come through.
Maybe it resonated deeply. Maybe it left you with even more questions than you started with.

Now what?
Contrary to what some might think, a tarot or cartomancy reading doesn’t “end” when the session is over. In fact, that’s often where the real work begins.

This article will guide you through what to do after your reading—so you can integrate, reflect, and act with intention.

✦ 1. Give Yourself Space to Breathe

Before jumping into interpretation or action, pause.

Take a few moments—whether it’s a quiet walk, a cup of tea, or just sitting with your thoughts—to let the reading settle. Insight needs time to land. You don’t have to do anything right away.

Let the energy of the reading echo for a bit.

✦ 2. Revisit Your Notes (or Replay the Recording)

If you took notes during the reading—or if your reader provided a recording or summary—review them within the next 24-48 hours.

Look for:

  • Key themes or repeated messages

  • Symbols or card combinations that stood out

  • Moments that made your body react (tension, goosebumps, relief)

You may notice new insights arise once you’ve had a little time and distance.

✦ 3. Journal Your Immediate Reactions

Ask yourself:

  • What landed with me?

  • What surprised me?

  • What am I resisting?

  • What did I want the cards to say?

Journaling your unfiltered thoughts helps you track emotional responses and your growth over time. Tarot is a mirror—and sometimes what it reflects takes a while to fully process.

✦ 4. Don’t Rush to “Fix” Everything

A powerful reading can make you want to change your whole life in a day. Don’t.

Take one insight at a time.
Choose one small action you can take based on what came through. This could be:

  • Having a conversation you’ve avoided

  • Setting a boundary

  • Starting a new routine

  • Simply thinking about something differently

Remember: real transformation is a process, not a productivity checklist.

✦ 5. Sit with the Discomfort, Too

Sometimes, a reading brings up things you weren’t ready to hear—or didn’t want to hear. That’s okay.

Resistance is still a form of connection. Instead of rejecting it, ask:

“Why does this feel hard to hear?”
“What’s being activated in me right now?”
“Where am I being asked to look deeper?”

Growth doesn’t always feel good—but it’s often necessary.

✦ 6. Pull a Follow-Up Card (If You’re a Reader Yourself)

If you’re still feeling unclear about part of the message, it’s okay to gently pull a clarifier card or ask for a closing reflection. Keep it simple.

Try:

  • “What energy is best to focus on next?”

  • “What’s the next right step for me?”

  • “What’s the deeper layer I’m being asked to explore?”

Just avoid over-reading—trust that what you received in the session was enough for now.

✦ 7. Trust Integration Over Obsession

You don’t have to keep revisiting the same question every week to “make sure.” Obsessive re-reading can dilute the message and feed anxiety.

Instead, trust the process.
Let the reading integrate over time.
Return to it when it feels right—not out of fear, but from curiosity or growth.

✦ 8. Circle Back Later

Some insights only make sense after a few weeks—or even months.

Set a reminder to revisit the reading after 30 or 60 days. Notice what changed.
Where were the cards right?
Where did you surprise yourself?

This is where you begin to see tarot as a map—not a destination.

✦ Remember…

A good reading doesn’t give you all the answers—it gives you a new lens to see yourself through. The cards may speak once, but you’re the one who carries the message forward.

So when your reading ends, treat it like an opening. A conversation with your higher self. A spark—not a solution.

You have time. You have choice. And you’re not doing this alone.
