Looking for a Legit Tarot School (Without Getting Pulled Into a Culty Dynamic)? Start Here

by | Jan 6, 2026

If you’ve been paying attention lately, you already know this: not all tarot schools are safe, ethical, or worth your time. Between vague curriculums, inflated authority, and mentors who blur boundaries, it’s become harder than ever to know where to learn tarot without getting burned.

(or if you haven’t and you’re from the PH, I advise you to read this Reddit post here.)

That’s why I’m very intentional about who I recommend.

This list isn’t about popularity, aesthetics, or who shouts the loudest online. These are teachers and platforms with long-standing reputations, clear methodology, and an approach to tarot that actually respects the student.

If you’re looking for a legit tarot education, this is where I’d start.

✦ Tarot for the Wild Soul — Lindsay Mack

Lindsay Mack’s work is deeply intuitive, grounded, and trauma-aware without becoming vague or unstructured.

Tarot for the Wild Soul is well-suited for those who want to work with tarot as a reflective and relational practice, especially if you’re interested in embodiment, nervous system awareness, and integrating tarot into real life.

What stands out:

  • Gentle but solid foundations

  • Emphasis on consent, pacing, and self-trust

  • Clear ethical stance around power and teaching

This is a good fit if you want tarot that feels human and supportive without being infantilizing.

✦ Jessica Dore — Classes & Workshops

Jessica Dore’s work bridges tarot, psychology, myth, and lived experience in a way that feels grounded and emotionally intelligent.

Her classes aren’t about hierarchy or “levels.” They’re about insight, reflection, and using tarot as a language for understanding patterns, behavior, and meaning.

What stands out:

  • Strong psychological framing

  • Accessible, thoughtful teaching

  • No performative spirituality

This is a great option if you want tarot that speaks to real life rather than escapism.

✦ Aradia Academy — Camelia Elias

If you want to learn tarot as a skill, not a personality cult, Aradia Academy is one of the strongest options out there.

Camelia Elias teaches tarot with clarity, rigor, and intellectual honesty. Her work emphasizes method, precision, and actually reading what’s in front of you instead of layering endless projections onto the cards.

What stands out:

  • Clear structure and progression

  • Strong focus on technique and application

  • No emotional manipulation, no mystification for authority

This is excellent for students who want to think critically and read cleanly.

✦ Mary K. Greer — Master Classes & Books

Mary K. Greer is a living legend in tarot education. Her work blends psychology, personal growth, and historical knowledge, giving students tools to develop deep, independent readings. You can find her Tarot and Petit Lenormand classes through Global Spiritual Studies.

What stands out:
• Focus on self-development and empowerment through tarot
• Strong historical and symbolic grounding
• Encourages students to think critically and develop intuition

Great for students who want tarot that’s intellectually rich, reflective, and independent.

✦ Biddy Tarot — Brigit Esselmont

Biddy Tarot has become one of the most accessible and professional online tarot learning platforms. Brigit Esselmont emphasizes practical reading skills for personal growth and professional practice.

What stands out:
• Structured courses from beginner to advanced
• Professional and approachable teaching style
• Includes guidance for building a tarot business

Perfect for students looking for clear, practical learning with an emphasis on real-world application.

✦ Tarot Reader’s Academy — Ethony

Ethony’s Tarot Reader’s Academy is one of the most well‑known online tarot programs, and for good reason: it’s structured, practical, and focused on helping readers develop confidence and clarity.

What stands out:
• Clear modules and milestones
• Focus on real‑world tarot reading skills
• Big community support without coercive language (I found a community here and met Jenna (@moonlit.faye), Jessi Huntenburg (@geniusgardentarot), Chris-Anne (@pixiecurio), Victoria Maxwell (@newagehipster333) and more.)

This is a solid option if you want organized training with an emphasis on real‑life reading practice.

✦ Rachel Pollack — Legacy Teachings

Rachel Pollack is foundational. Full stop.

While she is no longer with us, her teachings continue through books, recorded lectures, and classes hosted on platforms like Global Spiritual Studies. Her work shaped modern tarot as we know it.

What stands out:

  • Depth, scholarship, and integrity

  • Tarot as a living symbolic system

  • Emphasis on interpretation, not dogma

If someone teaches tarot and hasn’t studied Pollack’s work in some form, that’s honestly a gap.

✦ A Note on Discernment

Even with reputable schools, alignment still matters.

Before enrolling anywhere, ask yourself:

  • Does their teaching style resonate with how I learn?

  • Do they encourage independence or dependency?

  • Do I feel clearer after engaging with their content, not smaller?

A good teacher expands you. A bad one confuses and limits you.

✦✦✦

If you’ve read my recent articles, you already know why I care so much about ethical tarot education. I’ve seen what happens when authority goes unchecked and students are scammed, abused, manipulate and taught to override their instincts.

Learning tarot should feel grounding, empowering, and honest.

You deserve that kind of education.

And no matter where you choose to study, trust this above all else:
your intuition didn’t bring you to tarot so someone else could take it away from you.

P.S. If your budget is tight but you still want to learn tarot online for free, check out my page: Learn Tarot. It’s structured, straightforward, and completely free—no hierarchy games, no blurred boundaries, no pressure, and no performative mysticism. Just honest, accessible tarot knowledge.
