Deck Spotlight: The True Black Tarot by Arthur Wang

by | Jul 18, 2019

It’s finally here. And yes, I waited over a year for this.

The True Black Tarot by Arthur Wang is one of those decks that instantly stands out the moment you see it. Dark, bold, and unapologetically intense, this deck is not here to play.

My First Impressions

The first thing you notice is the weight. This deck feels substantial, almost ceremonial.

There’s a certain presence to it that makes you pause before even shuffling. It feels powerful, grounded, and very intentional.

The Artwork

If black is your favorite color, this deck will pull you in immediately.

The artwork is highly detailed and packed with symbolism. It blends human and animal imagery, creating archetypes that feel primal, raw, and deeply psychological.

Some cards include intense visuals, including themes involving animals, which might not resonate with everyone. If you’re sensitive to certain imagery, especially in cards like the Ten of Swords, this is something to keep in mind.

That said, the symbolism is layered and thoughtful. The more you look, the more you see.

Box, Card & Finish

This deck is known for its exceptionally thick cardstock.

✓ Thick, durable, premium feel
✓ Smooth finish despite the weight
✓ Comes in a sturdy, high-quality box (often referred to as a study/storage box
✓ With matte black gilded edge

Because of the thickness, shuffling can be a challenge, especially if you’re a hard shuffler like me. This is definitely a deck you handle with intention.

Guidebook

The guidebook is one of the highlights of this deck.

It goes beyond basic meanings and dives into:

✓ Symbolism behind each card
✓ Artistic intent
✓ Interpretive layers

If you’re someone who enjoys studying symbolism and understanding why elements are placed the way they are, this guidebook adds a lot of value.

How the Deck Works

The True Black Tarot follows the traditional 78-card tarot structure, but the way it delivers messages is much more intense and introspective.

This deck works best for:

✓ Deep personal readings
✓ Shadow work
✓ Psychological exploration
✓ Inner transformation

It’s not a “quick pull and go” type of deck. It asks you to sit, reflect, and really engage with the message.

Reading Style and Themes

This deck leans into:

✓ Shadow work
✓ Duality of human and animal nature
✓ Psychological depth
✓ Raw and honest reflection
✓ Transformation through discomfort

The energy is strong, sometimes confrontational, but always purposeful.

Who It’s For

This deck is perfect for anyone who:

✓ Loves dark, bold, all-black aesthetics
✓ Is comfortable with intense and symbolic imagery
✓ Wants to go deep into shadow work
✓ Appreciates premium, collector-level decks
✓ Enjoys studying symbolism and artistic detail

This may not be ideal for beginners or for light, casual readings.

My Honest Thoughts

This deck carries a powerful energy, which is exactly why I was drawn to it. And yes, the all-black aesthetic definitely helped.

It is more expensive than your typical deck, but once you hold it, you understand why. The quality, the weight, the detail, everything feels intentional.

That said, I personally treat this more as a personal deck rather than something I’d use for client readings. It requires extra care, and the energy feels very intimate and intense.

Also, as someone who shuffles a lot, I have to admit… it’s a bit of a workout.

But overall, it’s a stunning piece. One of those decks that feels more like an artifact than just a tool.
