So you’ve decided you want to learn astrology.

Maybe you’ve been looking at your birth chart and have absolutely no idea what half of it means. Maybe you’ve been watching astrology videos, saving posts, buying books, and somehow ending up even more confused than when you started.

Or maybe you keep seeing people talk about their Moon signs, rising signs, Saturn returns, houses, aspects, transits, and Mercury retrograde and you’re thinking…

How the hell does everyone know what they’re talking about?

I get it.

Astrology looks complicated when you first start learning it because there is a lot of information. There are planets, signs, houses, aspects, rulerships, transits, progressions, dignities, and eventually a whole vocabulary that makes absolutely no sense when you’re seeing it for the first time.

The good news is that you don’t need to learn all of it at once.

In fact, I wouldn’t recommend trying.

✦ Start with your birth chart

Before you start worrying about transits, retrogrades, progressions, or any of the more advanced techniques, learn how to understand a basic birth chart.

Think of the chart as your starting point.

Learn what the planets represent.

Learn what the signs represent.

Learn what the houses represent.

Then learn what happens when those things interact with each other.

For example, don’t just memorize that Venus represents love and relationships. Start paying attention to what Venus actually does in a chart.

Venus in Aries isn’t going to express itself the same way as Venus in Pisces. Venus in the 2nd house has a different focus from Venus in the 8th house. Venus making a conjunction to Saturn tells you something different from Venus making a trine to Jupiter.

This is where astrology starts becoming interesting.

You’re no longer just memorizing definitions. You’re learning how the pieces fit together.

✦ Learn the planets first

If you’re completely new, I’d start here.

The planets are the characters in the story.

The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto all represent different functions and themes.

You don’t need a 500-page explanation of each one.

Start simple.

What does Mercury do?

How does Venus operate?

What does Mars want?

What does Saturn teach?

What does Jupiter expand?

Get comfortable with those basic ideas before adding layers of complexity.

Once you understand the planets, learning the signs becomes much easier because you’re essentially asking:

How does this planet express itself here?

✦ Then learn the signs

This is where a lot of beginners get stuck because astrology content online tends to reduce signs to personality stereotypes.

Aries is confident.

Taurus likes food.

Gemini talks a lot.

Scorpio is mysterious.

You know the drill.

There’s more to the signs than that.

Learn the qualities behind them. Element, modality, polarity, planetary rulership, and the way each sign approaches life.

You don’t need to memorize a giant paragraph for every zodiac sign.

Start noticing patterns.

Fire behaves differently from water.

Cardinal signs initiate.

Fixed signs sustain.

Mutable signs adapt.

Those basic building blocks will take you much further than memorizing a list of personality traits.

✦ Don’t ignore the houses

The houses tell you where something is happening.

This is one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle.

You can know what Mars means and what Virgo means, but putting Mars in Virgo in the 10th house gives you something much more specific.

The houses bring astrology into actual areas of life.

Career.

Relationships.

Money.

Home.

Family.

Friendships.

Beliefs.

Creativity.

Health and routines.

And so on.

Once you understand the houses, your chart starts looking less like a bunch of random symbols scattered around a circle.

There’s a reason everything is where it is.

✦ Learn aspects before you go crazy with advanced techniques

Aspects describe the relationships between planets.

Conjunctions, oppositions, squares, trines, sextiles, and eventually some of the less commonly discussed aspects.

You don’t need to know every minor aspect immediately.

Start with the major ones.

A square doesn’t mean something terrible is going to happen.

An opposition doesn’t mean your life is doomed.

A trine doesn’t automatically mean everything will be easy.

This is also a good point to get comfortable with the idea that astrology isn’t just about finding “good” and “bad” placements.

A challenging aspect can describe something you have to work with.

An easy aspect can describe something that comes naturally.

Neither one tells the entire story by itself.

✦ Learn by looking at real charts

This is probably the part that helped me the most.

Don’t just read astrology books over and over again without actually looking at charts.

Use your own chart.

Look at the charts of people you know.

Look at the charts of historical figures, celebrities, or anyone whose life you already know something about.

Start asking questions.

What does this placement actually look like in someone’s life?

Does the chart support what I’m seeing?

Am I interpreting this placement on its own, or am I looking at the rest of the chart too?

That’s where you start developing actual chart-reading skills.

Astrology isn’t really learned by memorizing enough keywords until you can spit them back out.

At some point, you have to start putting the pieces together.

✦ Don’t try to learn everything at once

This is probably the easiest way to burn yourself out.

You discover astrology and suddenly you want to learn natal charts, synastry, composite charts, transits, progressions, solar returns, profections, electional astrology, horary, asteroids, fixed stars, and whatever else the astrology algorithm happens to throw at you that week.

Slow down.

You don’t need to know what a zodiacal releasing period is when you’re still trying to remember which house represents siblings.

Build the foundation first.

There will always be another technique to learn.

✦ You don’t need an expensive course to get started

If you’re able to study with a good teacher or take a proper astrology course, that’s wonderful.

Having someone explain concepts, answer questions, and correct your mistakes can make the learning process much easier.

But I know that’s not realistic for everyone.

Astrology courses and schools can get expensive, and not everyone has the money to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars learning something they’re still figuring out whether they actually want to pursue.

If you’re on a budget, books are a great place to start.

I’ve put together a list of astrology books I recommend if you’re looking for something to study from without spending a fortune on a course.

✦ Be careful who you learn from

This one matters to me.

There are a lot of astrology creators online now, which is great because there’s more information available than ever.

But not everything you see is good astrology.

If someone is constantly making dramatic predictions, telling you that a placement means you’re destined for tragedy, or throwing around complicated terminology without actually explaining anything, I’d look elsewhere.

You don’t need someone to scare you into believing astrology.

You need someone who can actually teach you how to understand it.

And if you’re paying someone for an astrology reading, you should be able to ask questions without being made to feel stupid for not knowing the terminology.

You’re learning.

That’s the whole point.

✦ You don’t have to memorize everything

I still look things up.

Astrology is huge. There are too many details, techniques, rulerships, degrees, cycles, exceptions, and historical approaches to keep every single thing sitting perfectly in your brain at all times.

Looking something up doesn’t mean you don’t know astrology.

It means you care enough to check.

The goal isn’t to become a walking astrology encyclopedia.

The goal is to understand what you’re looking at well enough to interpret it thoughtfully.

Astrology has a lot to learn. You don’t have to learn it all at once.

Start with your own birth chart.

Learn the planets.

Learn the signs.

Learn the houses.

Learn the major aspects.

Then start putting them together.

You don’t need to know everything before you start reading charts. You just need enough of a foundation to understand what you’re looking at.

The rest comes with practice.

And trust me, there will be a point where you’ll look back at your first chart interpretation and think, What the hell was I even talking about?

That’s normal.

It means you’re learning.
