The Year I Let Go of Everything I Was Taught to Cling To: A Story of Control, Collapse, and Rebuilding From Within

by | Oct 11, 2023

I was raised to believe that a good life was a stable one.
Get a secure job. Stay in one place. Avoid risk. Don’t rock the boat.

Security was the goal.
Predictability was the virtue.
And control — especially over the unknown — was something to strive for.

And for a while, I tried.
I did everything “right.”
I clung to routine. I built structure. I looked for guarantees — in relationships, in income, in future plans.
I even brought those desires into my spiritual practice — reading tarot to feel safe, using astrology to map certainty, seeking signs that everything would stay okay.

Then came the year that changed everything.
The year that pulled it all apart.
The year I was forced to let go — not by choice, but by reality.

✦ The Pandemic Was My Turning Point

Like many people, the pandemic flipped my life upside down.
Plans I thought were solid disappeared overnight.
People I leaned on felt suddenly distant.
Systems I trusted — emotional, spiritual, financial — cracked under the pressure.

And for the first time, I couldn’t fix it by working harder, thinking ahead, or staying “positive.”

The world was unraveling. And so was I.

The pandemic didn’t just challenge my outer life — it confronted my inner beliefs.
It made me question everything I’d been taught:

  • That control keeps you safe

  • That planning equals protection

  • That discomfort is dangerous

What it actually taught me was this:

Control is fragile. Change is constant. Resilience is internal.
And maybe… the stability I’d been taught to chase wasn’t the kind I truly needed.

✦ When Stability Becomes a Cage

Before that year, I thought change was the problem.
I thought if things just stayed the same, I could breathe.
I didn’t realize that what I was calling “peace” was actually fear with a polished surface.
What I called “security” was avoidance.
What I clung to as “safe” was slowly making me small.

But change came anyway — like it always does.

It came in the form of loss, uncertainty, hard decisions, relationships unraveling, plans dissolving, and truths I could no longer ignore.

And I had a choice:
Keep clinging to the version of me I built for survival…
Or surrender to the version of me being born through the chaos.

✦ The Tower Always Feels Personal

Tarot taught me this — in theory.
But the year everything fell apart, the Tower wasn’t just a card.
It was my life.

And unlike the curated breakdowns I used to see in online “spiritual glow-up” content, mine wasn’t romantic or tidy.
It was messy.
I doubted everything.
I grieved people I thought would stay.
I mourned a life I thought I was supposed to want.
And I couldn’t “manifest” or “moon ritual” my way around the grief. I had to go through it.

✦ What I Was Taught to Cling To

Letting go wasn’t just about external change — it was internal deconstruction.
Here’s what I had to unlearn:

  • That predictability = peace

  • That hard work always guarantees stability

  • That if I do everything right, nothing will fall apart

  • That control is the same as safety

  • That feeling lost means I’m doing something wrong

  • That my worth comes from being chosen, needed, or impressive

I wasn’t just letting go of plans — I was letting go of programming.

✦ What Held Me Through the Fall

The tools I used to cling to for certainty became something else:
Mirrors. Anchors. Permission slips.

  • Tarot didn’t give me answers — it reflected my inner shifts

  • Kabbalistic astrology showed me where my soul came to break patterns — not avoid them

  • Human Design reminded me that my energy isn’t meant to work like anyone else’s

  • Lenormand & Cartomancy helped me track real-time change without spiraling into panic

  • My spiritual practice became less about “protecting my energy” and more about expanding my capacity

I stopped trying to control the future.
I started listening to what the present was asking of me.
And even though nothing looked like the version of “success” I was raised to chase — for the first time, I felt aligned.

✦ The Gifts I Couldn’t See While Clinging

The year I let go wasn’t the year I lost everything.
It was the year I found what was real.

I found:

  • A new relationship with rest

  • An unshakable trust in my intuition

  • Friends who met me in my mess, not just my magic

  • A business that doesn’t burn me out

  • A spiritual path that holds me accountable — not just inspired

  • A version of myself that doesn’t need to prove her worth to feel it

And none of that came from control.
It came from surrender.

✦ Letting Go Is a Spiritual Practice

We’re not always raised to welcome change.
Sometimes, we’re raised to fear it — to avoid it, manage it, control it at all costs.

But when the cost of control is your peace, your truth, your joy…
Letting go isn’t a breakdown.
It’s a breakthrough.

The pandemic shattered the illusion that life could be predicted.
But in that collapse, it gave us a deeper truth:
The soul doesn’t thrive on control. It thrives on courage.

So if you’re in the middle of your own Tower moment…
If you’re watching your version of “stable” start to crack…
If you’re scared of who you’ll be without the roles, routines, or relationships you’ve clung to…

You’re not failing.
You’re waking up.

And I promise:
What’s meant for your expansion will never require your smallness to survive.

Today marks my first month at a new remote job — after two full years of making ends meet through my readings and online crystal shop, all while quietly (and sometimes desperately) looking for something more stable.

There were months I almost gave up.
There were times I felt like my skills, my value, and my path had disappeared into the void.
But they hadn’t.
They were just being reshaped.

I didn’t land this new chapter because I forced it.
I landed here because I finally stopped clinging to what no longer fit.
And now, I can breathe again — not because everything’s perfect, but because it’s finally aligned.

Letting go didn’t ruin my life. It made room for the one I was meant to live.
