Deck Spotlight: White Numen Tarot by Alba Ballesta Gonzalez

by | Jun 9, 2021

You guys…!!! MAY I JUST… THIS IS MY FIRST EVER deck review from a publisher!!! 🤯😭🤩😳 [pardon me while I stare blankly at the sky and ponder about life😳]

White Numen Tarot is a beautifully unique deck created by Alba Ballesta Gonzalez and published by Liminal 11. The name Numen comes from Latin, meaning “divine presence” or “spirit of a thing,” and that spiritual essence really flows through every card. This deck invites you to explore deep symbolism, ancient archetypes, and sacred animal energies.

My First Impressions

The moment I opened this deck I was struck by how delicate yet powerful it feels. The overall energy is broad, symbolic, and deeply spiritual. This isn’t a deck you casually flip through — it’s one you want to sit with and explore over time.

It’s especially rich for readers who enjoy symbolic depth and layered meanings, though it may feel a bit advanced for beginners who are still learning traditional tarot meanings.

The Artwork

Artwork is by Alba Ballesta Gonzales, and it’s truly whimsical, ethereal, and unique.

The muted tones and minimal style give the deck a dreamy, almost otherworldly atmosphere. At the same time, each figure and symbol feels intentional and layered. There’s a sacred feel throughout — a mix of ancient influence and modern expression.

The card back design is intentional too: it features a dog, which to me feels grounded and connected to the mundane world, and cranes, which feel ethereal and connected to the unseen or higher realms.

Box, Card & Finish

The card stock has a high glossy finish, which makes the cards feel smooth and silky in your hands. They fan and shuffle beautifully, and the slight grainy texture softens the white frames in a way that keeps the cards from feeling stark or harsh.

You also get two extra cards in the deck:
Black Numen — featuring a jackal, which has strong associations with Anubis and the underworld or night realms
White Numen — featuring a bull under a bright sky, a sacred animal across many traditions (Hindu, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Sumerian) representing celestial or expansive energies

The sacred animal symbolism adds a fascinating layer of ancient resonance to the deck.

It all comes housed in Liminal 11’s signature sturdy magnetic slipcase box, which is always a plus for storage and longevity.

Guidebook

The guidebook is meaty and well‑designed, with full‑color illustrations and detailed explanations.

It includes:
✔ card meanings and symbolic breakdowns
✔ elemental associations for the Minor Arcana
✔ expanded layers for the Major Arcana
✔ reflections and prompts to deepen your engagement

It doesn’t hold your hand in a simplistic way — instead, it opens you up to deeper symbolic awareness, inviting you to explore the numinous qualities in yourself and the cards.

How the Deck Works

This is a full tarot deck, so you can absolutely read it traditionally with upright and shadow meanings. At the same time, it begs to be read intuitively and symbolically, which makes it feel almost like a tool for exploration and meditation rather than just prediction.

It works well for:
✔ meditative readings
✔ shadow and inner work
✔ symbolic interpretation
✔ exploring archetypes and primal energies
✔ deep, introspective spreads

Because of the layers of sacred symbology and extra cards, it might feel dense at first, but once you start connecting dots, the deck becomes rich, expansive, and deeply rewarding.

Reading Style and Themes

This deck leans into:

✔ sacred animals and primal forces
✔ dualism — light and dark, mundane and celestial
✔ ancient symbolism and mythic resonance
✔ introspection and self‑knowledge
✔ reflection over prediction

The overall tone is contemplative and spiritual, encouraging you to go beyond surface meanings and engage with the deeper numinous qualities of each symbol.

Who It’s For

This deck is perfect for anyone who:

✔ appreciates deep, symbolic tarot
✔ wants a deck that feels contemplative and spiritual
✔ enjoys mythic and ancient archetypes
✔ likes reading intuitively and symbolically
✔ wants a unique artistic vision in their tarot collection

It may feel a little challenging for complete beginners, but for intuitive readers and symbolic thinkers, it’s a really rich tool.

My Honest Thoughts

White Numen Tarot holds a special place in my heart — not just because it’s my first publisher review, but because it really does feel like a numinous experience to work with.

I love looking for symbols in the cards, studying how the sacred animals and subtle imagery connect across suits, and discovering new layers each time I pull a card.

You’re invited not just to read the cards, but to watch yourself deepen with them. This deck feels like ancient self‑knowledge, waiting to be uncovered.

Whether you’re using it for meditation or for deep tarot spreads, White Numen Tarot is one of those decks that stays with you long after the reading ends.
